Fire as Architecture
How a single, well-placed flame can hold a 200-square-metre terrace together.
Fire is the oldest gathering point we have, and on a terrace overlooking the Mediterranean it does work no lamp or fountain can. It draws the eye, slows the pace of an evening, and gives a large outdoor room a centre.
We carve our fire features from single blocks of travertine or limestone where possible — a quiet object by day, a focal point by night. Gas is plumbed and concealed; controls are hidden in a flush travertine niche.
The placement matters more than the form. We site every fire pit so the prevailing breeze pulls smoke away from the dining table, and so the silhouette of the flame meets the horizon line of the sea.
Gas or wood
Gas gives instant flame, no smoke and no ash, and is the right answer on almost every sea-facing terrace where the Levante would otherwise carry smoke across the table. Wood gives heat you can feel across two metres and a smell that gas cannot imitate — worth it in a sheltered courtyard or a hillside garden with room to breathe.
